CBD and yoga – its roots and potential branches

CBD and yoga sounds like a match made in heaven and that’s because it is. This ancient practice is complemented seamlessly by this ancient herb and its become so wide spread across the USA. One practice originated in India (yoga) and Cannabis is a part of ancient Ayurvedic practices, so why is this wonderful concept not as prevalent in India? While those is USA take full advantage of these practices, seems like India is all set to catch up. And we’ll tell you why we should!

The connection between CBD and Yoga can be traced back to ancient Indian roots. Cannabis is referenced in the Vedas as it played an important role in enlightenment and spiritual progression. It is a sacred plant and belongs to the sacred practice of yoga. Here’s an account of a CBD Yoga class from someone in the USA – “When I walk into Jolie Parcher’s CBD yoga class in Amagansett, NY, a chimney of smoke rises from a hunk of burning sage and a sitar player is seated cross-legged, strumming away. As we settle onto our mats, Parcher explains that CBD oil might make us feel a little more relaxed, allowing calming sensations; it could also alleviate pain in the muscles or joints, allowing us to move with more freedom. Then she instructs us to turn our palms up if we want to receive the oil.

I swish the tincture around in my mouth and swallow, then lie back on a bolster and let the sound of the sitar carry me away. It’s been an intense summer—travel and family and work, work, work. It had been a while since I’d found space on my mat.

“CBD elevates consciousness and puts you in deeper touch with your body,” says Lou Sagar, founder and CEO of The Alchemist’s Kitchen, a New York City-based company that specializes in herbal remedies. I’m not quite sure where the yoga ends and the CBD begins.”

Tell us it doesn’t sound enticing?

The reason CBD might create a different reaction from THC, my experts tell me, is that the two interact with different receptors in the brain. THC, explains Earleywine, is a partial agonist of the CB1 receptor, which means it binds to that receptor and causes it to fire differently. CBD, on the other hand, doesn’t affect that receptor at all. The effects of CBD are outside the brain, in the body, he says.

How CBD can elevate your yoga practice

We can all admit that we are always facing some level of anxiety as we go about our days. With our crazy schedules, work load and responsibilities, out mind always seems to be elsewhere. This hum of anxiety slowly snowballs over time, giving rise to a number of physical and psychological illnesses. Although we can’t change out lifestyle completely, we can incorporate some healthy habits to our daily life – ones that can re-center you and give you the stability you and your body crave. One such amazing practice is Yoga! But what happens when we combine the calming practice of Yoga with consuming the healing elixir CBD? Let’s find out!

What are the benefits of CBD?

CBD does not get you ‘high’. That’s the best part about combining it with yoga. CBD and asana practice are made for each other. They complement each other amazingly because CBD helps with the following:

      • To relieve your pain – before or after your practice
      • To calm you down and get you in the zone
      • Decreases inflammation
      • Enhances your mood and therefore, can play a role in motivation

CBD works best in a restorative or yin practice but can also work for faster practices. If you’ve ever felt like on some days even yoga can’t hit the spot of zen then yoga is the perfect fit for you. It can also aid those with sore joints and muscles. Here’s how: The different cannabinoids in hemp, such as CBD, work in different ways with the cannabinoid receptors in the body, located throughout the endocannabinoid system. This is the same system that triggers your brain when you’re experiencing pain. When taking CBD, it interacts with the ECS and encourages it to produce an increased number of natural cannabinoids, which help to balance the system and produce an anti-inflammatory response. Therefore, helping to relieve those post-asana sore muscles.

CBD can also help to prolong the savasana feelings of bliss after you leave the mat. When we are feeling good, our brain naturally produces and releases a neurotransmitter called Anandamide. In Sanskrit, ‘Ananda’ means ‘bliss’, which is why Anandamide is aptly named the ‘bliss molecule’. Like all neurotransmitters, Anandamide is fragile and breaks down quickly in the body, which is why it doesn’t produce a perpetual state of bliss. It’s been found that CBD suppresses the enzyme that breaks down Anandamide. Thus creating longer lasting effects from the naturally occurring Anandamide in our system. In other words, that blissful feeling you get from your flow session can be enhanced even more by incorporating CBD into the mix.

Can CBD elevate your meditation experience?

Whether you’re an athlete, an entrepreneur or a gym buff, you would have gone down the path of wellness and used meditation as a tool to get you there. But meditation is not always easy and can sometimes be difficult to get into. This is why most people shy away from meditation. They find that their thoughts and emotions are amplified up to a point where they are unable to control them or be soothed by the act of meditating. It’s especially difficult after long and stressful hours to get in the zone and soothe your mind and soul. This is where CBD products come in and help greatly! We’ll tell you a couple of ways how.

      1. CBD is a slow but steady companion to meditation

The interesting thing scientists are finding out about CBD is that the endocannabinoid system interacts with it to restore balance and calm in your body. Not only this, the more you consume CBD, the more receptive your body becomes to it. After a couple of months of regular CBD consumption, you will see more long-lasting and instant results. It’s important to note that these results depend on the person and how their body reacts to it. So it’s all about trial and error and knowing what your body prefers.

      1. CBD elevates your mood

If you have trouble calming your mind so you can make the most of your meditation experience, CBD can help. The compound also promotes awareness and focus, helping people’s thoughts stay in the moment.

      1. CBD is just a tool and not the end-all-be-all

Much like meditation, CBD helps get you to states of calm and ease but there is no absolute guarantee. It’s not something that is a short-cut to being great at meditation. You will still have to focus on getting better through your own methods but CBD is the catalyst that will help put you at ease to do so.

An important factor that ties into this is dosage. Whether you’re looking for an entourage effect through hemp oil or a more direct CBD effect, you must consult our Doctors to know what’s best for you.
