About Butterfly Pea Flower

Clitoria Ternatea is a plant species belonging to the family Fabaceae and is commonly known as Asian pigeonwings, blue bellvine, cordofan pea, blue pea, Darwin pea or butterfly pea. The latin name of the genus ‘clitoria’ came from the word ‘clitoris’ because the flowers of this vine were imagined to have the shape of human female genitals whilst the species name is thought to have been derived from the city of Ternate in the Indonesian archipelago.

A recent study found that butterfly pea is effective in fighting stress, anxiety and depression and also has a positive impact on the central nervous system.

Butterfly Pea flower has several health benefits, both internal and external, as consuming this tea regularly is known to improve the overall health of the brain, skin, hair and body. Butterfly Pea Flower is known to be a natural nootropic as it boosts the levels of a chemical known as acetylcholine in the brain which is great for good brain health as it can potentially improve cognitive function. Butterfly pea flower is deeply rich in anti-oxidants and is particularly rich in an anti-oxidant known as anthocyanin, also found in blueberries and red wine, which is well-known for boosting heart health and fighting inflammation.

How to Consume

Boil water in your tea kettle. While waiting for water to boil, add the appropriate amount of loose-leaf tea to your tea infuser. Place the tea infuser inside your teapot or mug. When the water reaches the desired temperature, pour it over the tea infuser into your mug or teapot. Dunk the infuser a couple of times to circulate the water. This will allow the water to circulate through the leaves. Remove the infuser and set it aside for a second steeping. Serve in your favourite mug or pour over ice for a satisfying iced tea.

Tip: Double the amount of tea you use when making ice-tea

Tip: when re-steeping your tea, add another minute to the steep time. This is because the tea needs longer to draw out the flavour.
