The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) may serve as a potentially promising therapeutic target against different GI disorders, including inflammatory bowel diseases (e.g. Crohn’s disease), functional bowel diseases (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome) and secretion- and motility-related disorders. Receptors bind with the cannabinoids in the gut, which may regulate GI motility, secretion, and the maintenance of the epithelial barrier integrity. Cannabinoids present in Vijaya leaves exert biological function within the gut which may inhibit peristalsis and gastric acid secretion and enhance food intake on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Pre-clinical data from animal models of colitis have shown that cannabinoids can limit intestinal inflammation and disease severity, justifying the therapeutic role of cannabinoids in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ginger acts as an antioxidant and supports good digestion. It has been used in traditional medicine to relieve pain caused by diarrhea, predominant in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and associated conditions. Bael/Bilva fruit is effective in managing diarrhea, dysentery and other gastrointestinal disorders. Bael fruit is rich in anti-inflammatory compounds called tannins, which ease stomach upset by reducing the inflammation within the digestive tract. Kutaj has the most prominent benefit in managing diarrhea and dysentery due to its microbial activity. It is also useful in managing bleeding piles due to its astringent property.
Cannabinoids interact with the CB1 receptors which may increase metabolism and reduce energy storage, resulting in lower BMI. Compounds in ginger metabolises food right, have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which may help a person burn fat and regulate their blood sugar.
Cannabinoids stimulate the hunger hormone, ghrelin thereby helping patients with poor appetite or those who feel full before they have eaten enough to meet their nutritional needs and therefore improving appetite.
