Cannabinoids and cannabinoid receptors have been studied as potential targets for reducing pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The topical application of cannabinoids help to decrease inflammation and improve mobility.
Phytocannabinoids are an important bioactive component of the Vijaya plant which gives Analgesic effect locally. It is an antagonist of orphan G protein-coupled receptor 55 (GPR55, a potential third metabotropic cannabinoid receptor) without binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors. Interaction with GPR55 results in the inactivation of its pronociceptive signalling and thereby may provide symptomatic pain relief.
Inflammation or swelling could occur due to multiple reasons. Cannabinoids have been shown to reduce cytokine and chemokine levels which suppress inflammatory responses by binding to CB2 receptors present on immune cells and thereby provide relief against swelling.
