Full-spectrum Vijaya Leaf extract containing cannabinoids is known to decrease pain and associated inflammation when topically applied to muscles.
Pudina Satva contains menthol which helps improve microcirculation within the nerve. It also aids with nerve functioning at optimal levels, and reduces irritability and pain perception.
Menthol assists oxygen intake and reduces the production of lactic acid in the muscle. Menthol is a selective activator of transient receptor potential melastatin-8 (TRPM8) channels and is a vasoactive compound.
As a topical agent, it acts as a counterirritant by imparting a cooling effect. It initially stimulates nociceptors and then desensitizes them. Topically applied menthol may also activate central analgesic pathways.
Karpur Oil contains camphor and is contended to activate heat-sensitive transient receptor potential (TRP) vanilloid subtypes 1 (TRPV1) and 3 (TRPV3). The topical application of camphor to the forearm skin elicits cold and warm sensations. In the initial period of stimulation, the concentration of camphor around free nerve endings is low. Therefore, camphor induces a cold sensation. The concentration of camphor around free nerve endings becomes higher over time. Then, camphor induces a warm sensation.
Phytocannabinoids are an important bioactive component of the Vijaya plant and are an antagonist of orphan G protein-coupled receptor 55 (GPR55, a potential third metabotropic cannabinoid receptor) without binding to CB1 and CB2 receptors. Interaction with GPR55 results in the inactivation of its pronociceptive signalling and thereby may provide symptomatic pain relief.
Phytocannabinoids may also act as a muscle relaxer, making them a good choice for the recovery and treatment of sore muscles. The faster muscle recovery could be due to several mechanisms, or more likely their synergistic effects, such as antioxidant effects to combat free radical damage both at the muscle and central nervous system levels, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, and reduction in lactic acid and blood urea nitrogen.
Inflammation could occur due to multiple reasons. Cannabinoids have been shown to reduce cytokine and chemokine levels which suppress inflammatory responses by binding to CB2 receptors present on immune cells thereby may reduce muscle soreness.
