Women of Cannabis: Cynthia Nixon raises her voice for Cannabis

Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon has been outspoken about the benefits of marijuana. Nixon’s views on marijuana came to the forefront during the 2018 New York gubernatorial election, when Nixon was preparing to run a progressive challenge to the incumbent governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo. Nixon claimed marijuana prohibition had done enormous damage to communities across New York. Nixon publicly supported legalization across the state of New York, although she didn’t specifically claim to consume marijuana or CBD herself.

“I think it’s very important that we legalize marijuana in New York State. Eight other states have done it, plus the District of Columbia. There are a lot of reasons to do it, but first and foremost, because it’s a racial-justice issue. People across all ethnic and racial lines use marijuana at roughly the same rate, but the arrests for marijuana are 80 percent black and Latino.” – Cynthia Nixon at the New York Democratic Gubernatorial Debate.

Although it has already been legalized in many states, Cynthia Nixon advocates for the remaining states as well as the African-American citizens behind bars for the use/sale of marijuana. “There are a lot of good reasons for legalizing marijuana, but for me, it comes down to this: We have to stop putting people of color in jail for something that white people do with impunity,” she said.

What she points to is a systemic problem that exists all over the world where sometimes, marijuana is used as an excuse to marginalize the minority. Although she has taken more of a political stance, we hope she personally is this passionate about marijuana as it is a huge plus for the movement when huge celebs like her advocate for this healing plant to be open and available for all.
