Women of Cannabis: Mary Jane Gibson stays true to her name

Actress, comedian, journalist, and co-host of the infamous Weed+Grub podcast Mary Jane Gibson has put Cannabis on the map and continues to do so with her impactful writing. She spreads the message of the benefits of Cannabis at High Times where she is the long time culture editor. She also writes exceptional articles that disclose the benefits of Cannabis to the public on Rolling Stone and Green Entrepreneur. Her presence is strongly felt on the podcast Weed+Grub alongside comedian Mike Glazer. Weed + Grub is about cannabis, comedy, cooking, culture, and calling shit out. Emmy-nominated comedian Mike Glazer and cannabis culture writer Mary Jane Gibson smoke, snack, and swap tales with celebrity guests like David Crosby, Rachael and Megan Rapinoe, Jim Belushi, Roxane Gay, Ron Funches, RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars winner Trixie Mattel, The Simpson’s Showrunner Bill Oakley, Montel Williams, celebrity chef Nikki Steward (Dave Chappelle, Migos, DJ Khaled), NBA star Al Harrington, Animaniacs creator Tom Ruegger and more.

When asked for advice for budding cannapreneurs here’s what she had to say: "I've learned from the people who've fought to legalize cannabis for decades that we're all in this together. We need to keep working with compassion, openness, and honesty so that everyone can benefit—and profit from—this incredible plant that's brought me joy, unlocked my creativity, and given me a writing career. I hope industry leaders will listen to the cannabis community, and that we'll all celebrate federal legalization together soon."

Without outspoken and bold women like Mary Jane Gibson we wouldn’t be where we are today on the Cannabis front. Her advocacy in the US seeps into the markets and minds in India, giving us a better chance at legalization & for that we are super grateful!

“The greatest lesson I’ve learned in my journey in the cannabis industry is the priceless value of being seen. This plant has allowed me to be seen and to pass it on and see others. ... Other than the 18-35 white male stoner, most people's cannabis experience has been invisible, not unlike their own personal narrative. Women of Cannabis: Christine De La Rosa aims to make Cannabis accessible to all

CEO and founder of The People’s Dispensary – Christine De La Rosa is a mighty force in the industry and is working on making Cannabis more equitable for all. Cannabis has become a luxury, making it easy only for the upper and upper middle class to afford and De La Rosa aims to change that. The People’s Dispensary is the closest thing to an equity franchise model that exists in the cannabis space, aiming to both serve and be owned by communities that surround the dispensary. And it’s growing from its Portland flagship to more markets: Chicago, Fresno, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. De La Rosa’s cause is close to her heart, as cannabis has been a treatment for her own chronic illness. “I honestly do not know what my life would be like today without cannabis.”

Here’s what De La Rosa has to say about her mission: "The cannabis industry has the potential to be healing to an entire society by offering alternative therapies to everyone. I know from experience that this plant has enhanced my quality of life, but more importantly, it has saved my life. I am grateful to have had the access and ability to switch my entire pharmaceutical regimen to cannabis and create a new life on the other side of illness. I am a businesswoman and understand the need for the bottom line. However, my advice for current and future cannabis entrepreneurs and business owners is to lead with the goal of utilizing cannabis to heal communities at every level and let go of the greed that has embedded itself into the industry. Prioritizing the health and well-being of our communities will lead to the bottom line that you are seeking in a way that is sustainable and accessible. Never lose sight that each of us has the power to create an industry that is just."

Women of Cannabis: Maha Haq is a powerhouse in Cannabis education

Haq is a powerhouse in cannabis education. She is President and founder of Cannaclub University, a web of student alliances for those students who seek to concentrate on cannabis science, and aim to enter the cannabis space post-graduation, launching Cannaclub University at her alma mater of UCLA, the organization which now spans the country. She also works at an ISO accredited cannabis testing lab, CannaSafe Analytics. Haq is a champion for women and POC in the space, as well as a keynote speaker on cannabis education.

Being an immigrant child with strict parents made this journey difficult for Maha. When she was caught smoking at age 17, is when her career in Cannabis education began and her mom was her first candidate. Her mom is a clinical researcher at a cannabis hospital and was truly impressed by the benefits of Cannabis. She even took up the chance to present it to her colleagues and their patients. “I founded Cannaclub in an effort to combine career interests with my academic studies. While attending college, I managed operations at vertically integrated medical dispensaries for three years. I later joined a cannabis consulting firm based in Denver where I developed legal cannabis businesses in numerous states and six countries” she said when asked about how her story began.

Her advice for budding Cannabis entrepreneurs goes like this “work to realize how powerful you can be in the cannabis industry. We have a unique chance to mold a massive new market. Opportunities are everywhere, from business development and policymaking to healthcare solutions and scientific research. Anyone can become a pioneer in this space. Engage and participate with your community — doing so will promote advocacy, education, and transparency. Study the past, impact the present, and plan for the future.”

She has also worked towards changing the sexist ambience at dispensaries where women are made to wear revealing clothes while being a budtender. She says this is an obstacle for herself and many women in the industry. “Although I am no longer experiencing the same pressures as I did before, there is still an unfavorable behavior and perspective towards women in the cannabis space” she said.

As someone who is half Indian and Pakistani, her road to success was not smooth but she has persisted to become an inspiration for all women across the globe. With new research and education acceptance is sure to follow!

Women of Cannabis: Kate Hudson shares her love for Canna-infused drinks

When we say Kate Hudson, we think sunshine, happiness and confidence. If you have watched a Kate Hudson movie, you know her charisma is palpable. She is essentially known for being an actor, author and fashion entrepreneur. She rose to fame from her film Almost Famous and other movies she stars in include How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, Bride Wars, Fool’s Gold and more. She was born into a family of actors as her mom is the academy-award winning actor Goldie Hawn. She struggles with anxiety when watching her own performances saying she “gets cold and sweats” when watching them for the first time. She has openly spoken about meditation and how it has helped her overcome this struggle. Hudson said: "Meditation has been the most helpful and life-changing thing for me. You can feel the difference when you meditate on a regular basis. At least I can... I started practicing transcendental meditation a year and a half ago so I meditate 20 minutes in the morning and I try to do another 20 minutes in the afternoon."

When it comes to CBD, she has recently shared her love for  canna-infused beverages. Each can of the cranberry and sage flavoured cannabis drink contains two milligrams of THC and four milligrams of CBD. Cann sells its products with the message: “The future of social drinking is here.” And we couldn’t be happier to know that cannabis drinks may soon replace alcohol. It delivers a “light and uplifted” buzz with no hangover! “It’s the perfect replacement for a cocktail. It doesn’t leave you bloated, it leaves you beaming,” comedian and noted cannabis fan Chelsea Handler said. Kate Hudson took the Canna drink to the next level by creating her own cocktail with a little vodka for that extra punch. Although this may just be part of the transitional phase from alcohol to cannabis drinks, we can’t wait for the time when it’s just cannabis.

Do you think this Cannadrink should make it to the Indian market? Tell us what you think! If you’re interested in Cannabis infused teas and tinctures, you know where to find them. For the ladies, we have a code for 10% off. Use code WMN10 to avail this!
