How CBD can elevate your yoga practice

We can all admit that we are always facing some level of anxiety as we go about our days. With our crazy schedules, work load and responsibilities, out mind always seems to be elsewhere. This hum of anxiety slowly snowballs over time, giving rise to a number of physical and psychological illnesses. Although we can’t change out lifestyle completely, we can incorporate some healthy habits to our daily life – ones that can re-center you and give you the stability you and your body crave. One such amazing practice is Yoga! But what happens when we combine the calming practice of Yoga with consuming the healing elixir CBD? Let’s find out!

What are the benefits of CBD?

CBD does not get you ‘high’. That’s the best part about combining it with yoga. CBD and asana practice are made for each other. They complement each other amazingly because CBD helps with the following:

  • To relieve your pain – before or after your practice
  • To calm you down and get you in the zone
  • Decreases inflammation
  • Enhances your mood and therefore, can play a role in motivation

CBD works best in a restorative or yin practice but can also work for faster practices. If you’ve ever felt like on some days even yoga can’t hit the spot of zen then yoga is the perfect fit for you. It can also aid those with sore joints and muscles. Here’s how: The different cannabinoids in hemp, such as CBD, work in different ways with the cannabinoid receptors in the body, located throughout the endocannabinoid system. This is the same system that triggers your brain when you’re experiencing pain. When taking CBD, it interacts with the ECS and encourages it to produce an increased number of natural cannabinoids, which help to balance the system and produce an anti-inflammatory response. Therefore, helping to relieve those post-asana sore muscles.

CBD can also help to prolong the savasana feelings of bliss after you leave the mat. When we are feeling good, our brain naturally produces and releases a neurotransmitter called Anandamide. In Sanskrit, ‘Ananda’ means ‘bliss’, which is why Anandamide is aptly named the ‘bliss molecule’. Like all neurotransmitters, Anandamide is fragile and breaks down quickly in the body, which is why it doesn’t produce a perpetual state of bliss. It’s been found that CBD suppresses the enzyme that breaks down Anandamide. Thus creating longer lasting effects from the naturally occurring Anandamide in our system. In other words, that blissful feeling you get from your flow session can be enhanced even more by incorporating CBD into the mix.
